Civic*Celerator Demo Day

image

We are in a campaign year and the candidates are gearing up for a crowded primary. At Civic*Celerator we try to help make sense of where the money comes from for the Hawaii races. The Campaign Spending Commission collects data from each of the candidates as required by law. This data is published to the State’s open data portal: Data.Hawaii.Gov

Civic*Celerator brings together the talents of our civically engaged citizens and coding community to create applications, visualizations and tools to better understand this data.

Join us on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Iolani School, Sullivan Center for Civic*Celerator Demo Day, where we unveil each teams projects. Be a part of this transformation from open data to open knowledge.

We thank our good friends at Voqal, Common Cause Hawaii, HTDC along with Code for America, Campaign Spending Commission and Hawaii Open Data for making this possible.

Former FCC Commissioner and Chairman, Michael Copps was in town for Sunshine Week and spoke at the Outrigger Canoe Club to members of the Media Council of Hawaii. Copps spoke about how the media and Internet landscape is being threatened by communications monopolies and media consolidations. His take away message was, “Without media democracy, there is no democracy.” I caught this 3 minute excerpt of Copps talking about looking for new models. It was up to us (and the “grassroots movement”) to be creative and drive change.

Here is his Open Letter to Journalists.
